2017 Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic: Recap
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a 6-foot-5 185 pound guard from Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Tennessee was named Team Lightning’s Most Valuable Player in the 44th annual Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4,812 as Team Lightning defeated Team Thunder 122-109 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who is headed to play ball for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats finished with a game high of 29 points 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Gilgeous-Alexander was also the winner of the 3 point shooting contest. Western Kentucky bound Taveion Hollingsworth from Paul Laurence Dunbar in Kentucky finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds while being named the Most Valuable Player for Team Thunder.
The Louisville Cardinals had four future signees Jordan Nwora, Darius Perry, Lance Thomas, and Malik Williams participate in the game. It was Darius Perry out of Wheeler High-School in Georgia who came away with a team high 22 points for Team Thunder in the defeat to Team Lighting. IU basketball future has some talent in it as well with Justin Smith and Al Durham. Both talents came away impressive. Justin Smith the 6-foot-7 small forward out of Adlai Ed Stevenson in Illinois finished with a rim rattling dunk and 15 points and 4 rebounds while the left hand Al Durham chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
