Musketeers Must Contain Moody

After Tuesday  night’s exciting First Round game, the Xavier Musketeers now officially have an opponent to face in the 2nd Round of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Xavier will face the Ole Miss Rebels from the SEC, led by a fantastic college basketball player in junior guard, Stefan Moody. Moody had 26 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the Rebels 94-90 win over BYU Tuesday night.

The Musketeers must key in on Moody defensively, a task that senior point guard Dee Davis will be designated in Thursday’s match-up against the Rebels. “He’s a good defender, he will be fine,” said Davis’s teammate Remy Abell on the match-up. As for Abell his assignment defensively will be matching up against Jarvis Summers, who had 11 points in the Rebels win against BYU.

The biggest concern for the Musketeers will be rebounding, as Ole Miss had 14 offensive boards in the game on Tuesday night. The Rebels had 80 field goal attempts, while BYU only had 58  field goal attempts. Forwards James Farr, Jalen Reynolds, Trevon Bluiett, center Matt Stainbrook, and even the Xavier guards will have to do a good job of finishing defensive possessions with rebounds. Another thing Xavier must do is take care of the basketball, where they have averaged 12 turnovers per game this season. Ole Miss forced 15 turnovers in the game against BYU on Tuesday night and averages six steals per game.

Coach Chris Mack and the Musketeers will have their hands full tomorrow, but playing in a conference like the Big East will hopefully prepare them for the NCAA Tournament. Offensively the Musketeers will need Remy Abell, Dee Davis, Myles Davis, and the other Xavier guards to put pressure on the Ole Miss defense. That being said both Xavier and Ole Miss are averaging between 71-73 points per game so the game should be a dogfight. However Ole Miss did score 62 points in the 2nd half alone against BYU on Tuesday night, so anything is possible. Tip-off will be approximately at 4:10 EST Thursday on TBS in Jacksonville, Florida.
