2017 Longines Kentucky Oaks 143 Results – Abel Tasman – Payouts and Gallery
It was a cold and rainy day Friday, May 5th, 2017 in Louisville, Ky. The rain was consistent all day, which created an off track for the eventful 2017 Kentucky Oaks Day. Despite the muddy track and poor weather, the crowd turnout was still over 100,000 to witness Abel Tasman finish first place to claim the lilies in the 143rd Kentucky Oaks Race. Mike Smith ran an exceptional race in the mud to pull away down the stretch to win this prestigious horse race. Daddys Lil Darling was strong early, but faded late to finish 2nd, while Lockdown and Vexatious rounded out the Top 4 for a huge betting payoff. Bob Baffert legendary trainer of American Pharoah was very excited after the victory by Abel Tasman,
“It’s just exciting to win the Kentucky Oaks. We’d like to have a horse in the Derby but I’m so happy for the China Horse Club. They trusted me with the filly. And ‘Big Money’ Mike (Smith), what can you say? Incredible ride. We knew she was doing really well coming into this race. We got a nice, hot pace and it worked out. They were going pretty fast but I have a lot of respect for Paradise Woods and she was getting a lot of pressure. About the three-eighths pole he started moving and I thought we might have a shot. She’s a beautiful filly to train. She shipped beautifully and we knew we had a chance.”
Next up for Abel Tasman is the second leg of the Triple Crown for the Fillies in the 2017 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico Race Track, May 19th 2017 in Baltimore, MD.
