Adrien Broner defeats Khabib Allakhverdiev captures WBA title
Boxing fans packed the U.S. Bank Arena Saturday night in Cincinnati, Ohio to witness their hometown son Adrien Broner capture the vacant WBA super-lightweight championship after defeating Russian fighter Khabib Allakhverdiev. Broner (31-2, 23 KOs), entered the ring in some black and orange trunks promoting his About Billions brand, but appeared to be about boxing all night following his 12th round technical knockout of Khabib with 39 seconds remaining in the final round.
“It’s definitely all up to me. After that bell right no one can help me.” Broner said after the fight. “I’m still AB, but this next half of my career I’m going to be about boxing and about billions. “Nothing has changed. I’m comfortable at whatever weight my opponent is comfortable at. But I’m getting wiser, I’m getting older.”
Allakhverdiev (19-2,9 KOS) was stubborn most of the bout landing some clean punches on Broner from time to time, but nothing really hard enough to hurt the four time world champion. From the opening round, Broner overwhelmed Khabib with his hand speed which proved to be the difference in the fight. Adrien was able to back Allakhverdiev up in Round six using power punches, upper cuts and great combinations. By Round eight Broner would be in complete control over the fight shooting the jab consistently which gave him plenty of opportunities for body shots and right hands to the head.
“No question, Broner won it,” Allakhverdiev said. “He was better than I was tonight.”
Entering the final round Broner would square up with Allakhverdiev in the middle of the ring landing most of his shots he was throwing at a high percentage. The damage from the shots landed caused Khaib nose to bleed and made him an easy target. After several of Broner punches went unanswered from Allakhverdiev, the referee Harvey Dock Jr. would step in between the two fighters and stop the fight giving Broner the win in the 139 pound division. During the post fight inside the ring, Broner would call out Ashley Theophane, a 35-year-old former British champion from the Floyd Mayweather camp as his next possible future opponent.
“I bet I bring the girl out of that boy like Bruce Jenner.” Broner said about Theophane being his next opponent.
