Always Dreaming wins Kentucky Derby 143 – Order of Finish, Replay
With John Velazquez aboard, Always Dreaming held off a charging Lookin At Lee down the stretch to claim the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday, May 6th at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. More than 150,000 witnessed trainer Todd Pletcher earn his 2nd Kentucky Derby since 2010 win he won with Super Saver. Always Dreaming was the second choice in the morning line at 5-1 behind Classic Empire who finished 4th. Third Place went to always in the mix colt Battle of Midway out of WinStar Farm and Don Alberto Stable. Always Dreaming trainer Todd Pletcher was emotional after the race:
(A very emotional Todd Pletcher shedding tears of joy): “I knew we had a big shot with this horse and I was hoping it would happen. The trip unfolded not exactly the way we had planned. We knew for sure we didn’t want to be behind a wall of horses and that turned out OK. Johnny (Velazquez) of course rode him great. This is so special to win this race with Johnny. We’ve been together for all these years and this is sweet. I’m sorry I don’t have a clue about my other two horses. I was so intense following Always Dreaming up front that I never did get a chance to pick them up.”
