The Bruins of Ballard High School were one game away from advancing to the KHSAA 6A State Semi-Finals last season. Ballard’s season ended after a horrible 48-21 loss on the road against Dixie Heights High School. Before the loss to Dixie Heights the Bruins were on a hot streak, winning seven straight games and going 3-0 in district five of the 6A Class. So what will be the keys for the Bruins getting to State this season?
One of the keys for the Bruins this season could be the play of their senior defensive end Omardrick Douglass. Douglass at 6 foot 4 is very athletic and uses this athleticism to get past the bigger offensive linemen. He may not be the biggest defensive end but his speed and leaping ability are what help him become a major factor on defense. Last season Douglass and the Bruin defense allowed just 46 passing yards per game. Douglass was second on the team in tackles with 81 and first on the team in sacks with 14. So Analyzed Sports caught up with Omardrick AKA “O” to see what his goals were for this season and to find out what he has worked on this off-season.
Analyzed Sports: How has being so close to going to the State championship games last year motivated you for this season?
Omardrick: Being so close to the state championship games last year has made me hungry and motivated to get to the next step.
Analyzed Sports:What have you been working on the most this off-season?
Omardrick: I have been working on my strength and speed this off-season trying to become more powerful, so that I can explode off the line of scrimmage.
Analyzed Sports:What are your own individual goals for this upcoming season?
Omardrick: My individual goals for this year are to be on the All-State team and break the all-time sack record in one season at Ballard.
Analyzed Sports: Will you be playing more defensive end this season or more at the linebacker position?
Omardrick: I will be playing more defensive end but will drop into coverage at times as a linebacker.
Analyzed Sports: What do you think is your greatest attribute/advantage/skill as a player is and why?
Omardrick: My greatest attribute as a player I have is the way that I see the game and use my speed to allow me to make counter moves against bigger offensive linemen.
Analyzed Sports: As a team what will be the key(s) to Ballard taking that next step forward and getting to the State championship?
Omardrick: As a team the keys for us will be leadership and coming together as one unit!
The Ballard Bruins will start the 2015 football season at home against Oldham County. Ballard defeated Oldham County last season at Oldham County 49-21. As for Omardrick Douglass, he does have a scholarship offer from Kentucky Wesleyan College, a Division II school that seems to relish in recruiting some of the top local high school football players from the state of Kentucky. However after having a great junior season it will be interesting to see if Omardrick Douglass is able to increase interest in other schools as well. He and the Bruins will be looking to handle the unfinished business of last year and try to advance to the KHSAA 6A State Championship games.
