Elena Delle Donne Leads Sky Past 1st Round
The Atlanta Dream came into this year’s WNBA Playoffs embracing the slogan “Unfinished Business”, because they were hoping to return back to the WNBA Finals. Last season the Dream were swept in the WNBA Finals by the Minnesota Lynx and hoped to win this year’s WNBA championship. Unfortunately for the Atlanta Dream Elena Delle Donne and the Chicago Sky had other plans.
The Chicago Sky have never won a playoff series, something that most teams around the WNBA have done. The Sky came into the WNBA Playoffs as the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference and had a regular season record of 15-19. Elena Delle Donne had missed a lot of games due to her treatment of Lyme’s Disease, but fortunately for the Chicago Sky she is healthy now.
The Sky would have to face the Atlanta Dream in the opening round of the WNBA playoffs, a series many sports analysts thought the Dream would win. However a healthy Elena Delle Donne would prove to be the deciding factor in the series. Delle Donne would have 21 points in game 1 as the Sky escaped from Atlanta with an 80-77 road win, after this game winner by Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot.
The win would give Chicago its first playoff victory in team history, but the Dream would bounce back in game 2. Led by All-Star Angel McCoughtry’s 39 point performance, the Dream would beat the Sky in Chicago 92-83. The Sky would have to win in Atlanta to advance to the first round of the playoffs and they would do it in a familiar fashion.
Tuesday night the Chicago Sky would have one of the most epic comebacks in WNBA playoff history. The Sky didn’t get off to a good start in-game three, as they trailed 54-41 at half time. In the 3rd quarter things wouldn’t get better for the Sky as the Dream had a 67-51 lead going into the 4th quarter. However the Sky outscored the Dream 30-13 in the 4th quarter and Elena Delle Done would not be denied, as she scored 17 in the last quarter. Delle Done would end up with 34 points in the game, including the game winning shot with 8.2 seconds remaining to give the Sky an 81-80 win over the Dream. With the win, the Chicago Sky advanced to the WNBA Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history.
Now the Sky will have to match up against an Indiana Fever team, led by Tamika Catchings who has played great as of late. Indiana beat Chicago in the Fever’s last regular season home game 71-67. Game 1 will be played Saturday at 7 pm EST in Indianapolis. With stars Elena Delle Donne and Tamika Catchings playing at the top of their games, it should be a great WNBA Eastern Conference Finals.
