Former Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis Dies at age 74

Former World Boxing Association Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Ellis died today at Baptist Health Hospital in his hometown of Louisville, KY.  Ellis won the WBA Championship belt in 1968 in a bout against Jerry Quarry. Ellis was Muhammad Ali’s good friend and sparring partner.  They fought a total of 4 times 2 amateur and 2 professional.  Ellis went 1-3 against Ali with his only win coming during their amateur match.  During Ellis professional career he was 40 – 12 with 24 of those wins coming by way of knockout.  Here’s to Jimmy Ellis another Louisville Legend.  In the Loving Memory of Jimmy Eliis, please take a look at the bout between Ali and Ellis called the The Inevitable Fight.  For some strange reason Ali was representing New Jersey while Ellis was representing his hometown of Louisville.  Really it’s a boxing match between two guys from Louisville, Ky.
