Highlights from Coach Calipari’s Media Day 2014

The 2014 – 2015 College Basketball season is upon us.  On the eve of Big Blue Madness, UK basketball head coach John Calipari met with the media to discuss the upcoming basketball season which has his Kentucky Wildcats ranked Pre-season number 1 in the Top 25 Coaches Poll.  John Calipari enters the season as one of the favorites to win the 2015 National Championship after coming up one game short of winning the NCAA a season ago.  A loaded roster of 9 McDonalds All-Americans not counting 7-footer Willie Cauley Stein will give Calipari the opportunity to do something that’s never been done before in the history of college basketball. That’s to make a run at a title while trying to divvy up minutes for 12 players. If anyone is capable of doing it, John the Magician Calipari can. Time will only tell.  Will this talented group put their ego’s to the side and sacrifice for the sake of the team?  How will the Two Platoons system work?  What will the two different teams look like?  How will Coach Calipari get minutes to Dominique Hawkins and Derek Willis?  Those are some of the questions that will be answered throughout the season, but until then here are some of the highlights from Coach John Calipari’s Media Day yesterday.  Grab a cup of Joe and enjoy.

ON THE HEALTH OF WILLIE CAULEY STEIN & TREY LYLES:

“Trey’s probably about 90 something percent, Willie’s healthy and able to go. Trey still you know a little more speed and lift, and him trusting his leg a little bit, but he’s fine.”

ON SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF COACHING HIS TEAM:

“There are probably I will tell you things that to score against this team, cause this team is very long. You have to beat us in transition, so obviously we are working on that.  Down in the Bahamas it was probably one of our weak areas.  The second thing you’re going have to do is shoot alot of three’s, cause you’re just not going to get anything next to the rim, so were spending more time than I have in the past, how to guard the three line, and also knock down three shooters. That were playing them a little different than I have in the past. The other non-negotiable’s are diving for the balls, loose balls, and the other would be sprinting the court.  If you don’t sprint the court it’s an absolute you will sprint, if you don’t  you will come out.”

ON THE TYPE OF PLAYER TREY LYLES IS:

“The biggest thing we saw with him is, he’s got some of that dog in him, like he’s bringing it.  If you came at him, he’s not moving so when you come at him the next time he’s in the same place. And when he comes at you, he’s coming at you and you’re going know he came at you.  The biggest thing though is his skill set, he’s a smooth player who can shoot, and he’s 6″10, so playing him at the three is not like people say YOU CAN’T PLAY HIM, no if you watch he can easily play the position.”

ON BEING NUMBER 1 IN THE COACHES POLL TO START THE SEASON:

“There are probably five, six, seven teams that all could of been #1 in the country.  At the end of the day you got to play games and figure out.”

ON THE TWO PLATOON SYSTEM:

“This isn’t communism, so if one group deserves to play a little bit more they will, It’s not communism, If two guys separate themselves and need to get more minutes, because you all look and say that kid is so good he needs more minutes.  It’s not communism.  They’ll get more minutes, but were going to figure that out has we go.”

ON HIS EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS TEAM:

“Making this work for all these kids. If we do that, they’ll drag this thing were it supposed to go.”
