Duke’s Center proves why he’s #1
Center Jahlil Okafor proved why he was considered the number 1 prospect in the class of 2014 scoring 17 points to help No. 4 Duke defeat Michigan State 81 – 71 in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana last night.
The 6’11 270 pound center made it look easy down low using his wide frame and showing off his array of post skills. At one point during the first half Okafor scored 6 of the Blue Devils first 10 points. The Spartans had no answer for the big man down low. It was foul trouble of Duke’s Super freshman that kept him for doing more damage in the paint.
When Okafor went to the bench at the 8:59 mark in the 2nd half after committing his 4th foul, the other talented freshmen from the class of 2014 T. Jones and J. Winslow helped extend the Blue Devils lead by scoring 17, 15 during the big man’s absence.
Jahlil Okafor would return to the game with 5:22 left. As the time clock reached zeros the No.1 center in the nation’s stat line read, 8 of 11 from the field finishing with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.
” I thought I played decent, but as a team we played great,” Okafor said after the Blue Devils’ third straight double-digit victory. “It was a really big win for us. They gave us a lot of challenges. ”
Up next for Okafor and the Blue Devils are the Temple Owls in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Madison Square Gardens Friday night.
