Kevin Ware, lifts Georgia State to NCAA Tournament
Former Louisville Cardinals guard Kevin Ware will be returning to the NCAA Tournament after leading the Georgia State Panthers to the Sun Belt Championship Sunday 38-36 over Georgia Southern. Kevin Ware was the only player scoring in double figures with 18 points 5 rebounds 1 assist and 1 steal. The win lifts the Georgia State Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament Appearance since 2001.
March 31, 2013, Kevin Ware gain national attention after suffering a horrific leg injury during the 2013 NCAA Tournament Elite 8 game with his former team the Louisville Cardinals. The 2013 Cardinals, overwhelmed with emotion, would rally in honor of Kevin Ware to defeat the Duke Blue Devils 85-63 to reach the Final Four and eventually go on to win the 2013 NCAA Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I don’t think we could have gathered ourselves — I know I couldn’t have — if Kevin didn’t say over and over again, ‘Just go win the game,” Pitino said. “I don’t think we could have gone in the locker room with a loss after seeing that. We had to gather ourselves. We couldn’t lose this game for him. “We just couldn’t.”
Ware and Louisville would mutually decide to part ways the next season for reasons unknown to the public, after only playing nine games for the Cardinals. Kevin Ware decided to seek a medical red-shirt and transfer closer to home to play for the Georgia State Panthers.
Now a junior starter for the Panthers, and lifting his team to a Sun Belt Conference Title, the Sun Belt Tournament MVP will have the chance to inspire the nation again, as he gets to turned the page from that tragic day two years ago. Who knows, maybe he’ll get to play in Louisville again, as the 2nd/3rd round NCAA Tournament games are held in the KFC YUM Center this year.
