Makayla Epps leads the way, No. 8 Kentucky defeats Louisville

Makayla Epps had 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists Thursday night to help the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats defeat instate rival Louisville Cardinals 72-54 to improve to 8-0 on the season.  14,425 packed Rupp arena to watch UK Hoops shoot over 51.8 percent from the field to give the Wildcats their 5th straight victory in the rivalry game against the Cardinals (3-5).

“The Freshmen played out their minds.” stated Makayla. ” Maci Morris had a great defensive game, Lex was scoringthe ball, Janee was scoring the ball.  We had alot of players in double figures, so whether I had a great night, or a terrible night, long as we won and played in this building was fine with me.”

Alexis Jennings had 14 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes of play, and Taylor Murray had 11 points and four rebounds in the victory for the Wildcats (8-0). Senior guard Janee Thompson added 10 points and 3 assists for Kentucky, which led 39-22 at halftime shooting 50 percent from three and 53.3 percent from the field on 16 of 30.

Briahanna Jackson led Louisville with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Sophomre forward Myisha Hines-Allen added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.  Louisville only shot 18.2 percent from three on 2 of 11 shooting, one of the lowest percentage totals on the season.

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Cardinals 36-27 on the backboards, but committed a game high 18 turnovers to only 12 assists. Both the Cardinals and the Wildcats got 13 points off of their turnovers, while Kentucky held a 30-18 point advantage in the paint.  The Wildcats finished the game shooting 51.8 from the field and 42.9 on 6 of 14 from three.

It was the 52nd meeting between the two schools.  Kentucky currently leads the overall series 34-18.

UP NEXT: – Kentucky will travel on the road to take on Middle Tennessee on December 13, before their big game with the Duke Blue-Devils on December 20 in Rupp Arena.

The Cardinals will look to bounce back against IUPUI at home on Sunday, December 13th.
