Women’s Basketball: Notre Dame advances to the Elite 8
Sophmore guard Arike Ogunbowale finished the game with 32 points on 11 of 22 shooting and pulled down 9 rebounds, as the No. One-seeded Fighting Irish controlled the game to defeat the No. Fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes 99-76 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY to advance to the Women’s NCAA tournament’s Elite 8.
Freshman Forward and Kentucky native Erin Boley scored 14 points, while grabbing 9 boards in the victory for the Fighting Irish (33-3).
“I’m just so proud of this team right now.” Coach McGraw stated., “Especially our freshmen and sophomores. Our young players stepped up in a big game. I thought Erin played her best game of the season. Arike with a career high in a huge game without Bri. It was a struggle for us this week trying to overcome that. Just so proud of the resilience of this team.”
Kelsey Martin led the way for the Ohio State (28-7), with 18 points, 6 assists, while Shayla Cooper helped the Buckeyes with 9 points and 13 rebounds. Linnae Harper and Asia Doss finished the game with 8 points each in the defeat to Notre Dame.
Notre Dame shot on 54.5 percent on 18-33 of its first-half field goal attempts to take a (50-42) lead into halftime. The Ohio State Lady Buckeyes shot a decent percentage as well at 51.4 percent on 18 of 35 shooting from the field. The difference in the half time score was the free-throw line, as Notre Dame was 6 of 7 from the charity stripe, while the Buckeyes didn’t attempt a free-throw in the entire first half.
The Fighting Irish finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field, and was also hot from behind the arch at 50 percent on (12 out of 24) shooting. The Buckeyes finished the game shooting 42% percent from the floor, while managing to only shoot (7-of-10) from the free-throw line.
