NFL Protests- Don’t Let the Method Override the Message

It’s been a little over a year since former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem and shook up the country with his protest. Kap’s actions have become such a huge story that this past weekend the president of the United States, Donald Trump, “strongly” suggested that NFL owners fire “Sons of Bitches” (players) who choose to kneel during the Star Spangled Banner. This caused numerous owners, players, coaches, and other members of the league to join forces and speak out against Trump’s remarks, but while many people may view this as positive and as a form of unity, the question I ask myself is what is the real reason they are doing this?

While I am not saying I have a definite answer here’s what I want people to consider, there were numerous NFL owners who supported Trump’s campaign including New England Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones knelt and held hands with his players before the national anthem played in last night’s game against the Cardinals and then they all stood together during the playing of the song.

Only a handful of NFL players have supported what Colin’s protest and if there were any owners who did, well I don’t recall hearing any names mentioned! So why protest now? Maybe because owners are owners and don’t like being told what to do by Trump, maybe because the NFL is composed of nearly 80% percent black athletes who probably called their owners with complaints about his comments, or maybe because they have changed their minds and opinions on Donald Trump and felt the need to defend their players (employees).

I can’t really determine why owners and more players knelt this past weekend, but I can say that the issues that Kaepernick’s protest were intended to bring awareness to are still happening! Unarmed people of color are still being killed by police and those responsible for these killings aren’t being held accountable by the legal system (Philando Castile). Also soldiers in the military are still being disrespected by this country (Transgender military personnel) and the outcries of these people and others who have been oppressed aren’t being heard.

The unfortunate thing about all of this is that so many people are disgusted by athletes kneeling peacefully during the Star Spangled Banner, yet so few people are disgusted with the issues that Kaepernick’s protest was intended to bring awareness to! At the end of the day you can hate the method he used but at the same time don’t let that be the reason you overlook the “Real” issues that oppressed people are facing in this land meant for the “free” and the “dreamers”.
