Sunday night was a great Super Bowl between the New England Patriots vs the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams played extremely well, and the Patriots came out on top 28-24 in the game. Congrats to the New England Patriots on winning the Super Bowl, and congrats to the Seattle Seahawks, on a great season. This piece 49 Takeaways from Super Bowl XLIX, shows what I think were some of the takeaways from the game, some interesting stats from and about the game, and a lot more. 49 Takeaways from Super Bowl XLIX
I. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the best QB and Head Coach combination in the NFL, and probably all-time in the NFL. Belichick and Brady have won 4 Super Bowls together.
II. The Seahawks had some injuries in the secondary, despite this, and despite losing Jeremy Lane during the game, they managed to get 2 interceptions off of Tom Brady.
III. The Patriots did a great job of containing Russell Wilson from making plays with his feet outside of the pocket. In fact, Wilson only had 3 carries for 39 yards. In the Seahawks-Packers game, Wilson had 7 carries, and 1 TD.
IV. Tom Brady wins his Fourth Career Super Bowl Ring ,becomes only the third NFL Quarterback to achieve this, the others, were Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw.
V. If Tom Brady can win 5 Super Bowls, he will have the most Super Bowl Victories by a QB. Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round, Terry Bradshaw (1st Overall Pick- 4 rings), and Joe Montana (3rd Round Pick- 4 rings).
VI. The match-up I thought was the most important to watch in Super Bowl 49, was the battle of the Tight Ends. Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, had 6 Catches, while Seahawks TE Luke Wilson, had 0 catches.
VII. In the Seventh Round, Pick 232, of the 2009 Draft, the Patriots drafted Julian Edelman, a (5-10, 200lbs) QB from Kent State University. In Super Bowl 49, he had 9 catches, but his biggest catch was the Game-Winning TD with 2:02 left in the game, to give Pats the lead for good at 28-24.
VIII. The Patriots defense did a great job of eliminating the Seahawks chances on getting first downs on 3rd down conversions, the Seahawks were 3-10.
IX. The Seahawks need to find a way to re-sign RB Marshawn Lynch. They also need to draft a RB in the 2015 NFL Draft.
X. Bill Belichick is tied for most Super Bowl Victories as a HC, with Chuck Noll with 4 rings.
XI. The Seahawks had a total of 11 drives in Super Bowl 49, the Patriots on the other hand, had 12. In the Patriots’s last possession they scored the game-winning TD on a catch by Julian Edelman from Tom Brady. If the Seahawks would have ran the up-tempo offense, they could have had more chances to score points.
XII. Of Russell Wilson’s 12 completions in Super Bowl 49, Doug Baldwin, the Seahawks top wide receiver all season for Seattle, only had 1 catch for 3 yards.
XIII. Tom Brady broke Montana’s Super Bowl record for TD passes. Brady now has 13 Career Super Bowl Passing TDs.
XIV. Tom Brady despite his two interceptions showed that he still had plenty of confidence during the game. Brady and the Patriots weapons connected for 21 First Downs from passing, the Seahawks on the other hand only had 10 First Downs from passing.
XV. The Seahawks traded Percy Harvin this year to the Jets, and lost Golden Tate to the Lions in free agency over the summer. Harvin and Tate could have had an impact in the passing game for the Seahawks. The Seahawks 4 Wide Receivers combined for 11 catches in the game.
XVI. The Patriots had 72 Total Plays on offense, while the Seahawks had 53 Total Plays on offense.
XVII. The Patriots controlled the time of possession in the game, NE: 33:46, Seahawks: 26:14.
XVIII. The Seahawks have one of the best young Linebacker core, having 23 tackles combined. Their two linebacker leaders Billy Wagner and K.J. Wright will continue to get better, and the Seahawks Defense as well.
XIX. Undrafted out of Kentucky, Seahawks rookie WR Chris Matthews, who only played 19 snaps all season, showed that he become a top WR in the NFL, having 4 catches 109 yds 1 TD.
XX. Tom Brady was 1/22 in throwing passes for 20 yards or more in his Super Bowl career headed into the game. Tom Brady, used a short-route offense in Super Bowl 49, and wide receivers, Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman combined for 14 catches and 157 yards.
XXI. Patriots CB Malcolm Butler (#21) makes the biggest play of the Super Bowl. He is the only player from West Alabama ever to make it to the Super Bowl, and also win a Super Bowl.
XXII. The Seahawks Defense played really well, but Seahawks Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn, left to become the Head Coach with the Atlanta Falcons after the game.
XXIII. It took 23 minutes in Super Bowl 49 for Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to get his first completion of the game; it was the second longest drought in Super Bowl History.
XXIV. Marshawn Lynch had 24 carries in Super Bowl 49, one for TD, but I believe that he should have gotten the ball on the goal-line situation for the Seahawks, to take the victory.
XXV. Richard Sherman #25 (CB) was only targeted once during the whole game.
XXVI. Seattle failed to play up tempo throughout Super Bowl 49, and it cost them. In the second quarter, before halftime they drove 5 plays 80 yards in 29 seconds to score a TD. They should have continued to use that style of offense in the second half.
XXVII. When Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane went down with his arm injury, the Seahawks were in trouble. His replacement, Tharold Simon, was targeted often by Tom Brady, and Simon couldn’t stop the wide receivers he was covering.
XXVIII. The Patriots show that they aren’t one dimensional offensively to win a game. Against the Ravens it was in the air, against the Colts it was on the ground, and against the Seahawks it was in the air in Super Bowl 49.
XXIX. WR Julian Edelman has truly become one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, especially scoring the game-winning TD in Super Bowl 49.
XXX. Malcolm Butler made the big defensive play to win Super Bowl 49, just like many plays and players before; i.e. The Tackle by Mike Jones, The Two Interceptions by Dexter Jackson for the Buccaneers, or The Plays Made by Malcolm Smith last season for Seattle.
XXXI. Rookies can make a difference and emerge in the Super Bowl. Rookie Chris Matthews showed why he was signed after his tryout. His impact for Seattle was like Timmy Smith of the Redskins in the 1987-1988 season. Smith who only had 29 carries 129 yards during the season, but in the Super Bowl, Smith had 22 carries for 204 yards.
XXXII. Russell Wilson was a play away from setting a new NFL record. He could have been the first QB in NFL history to win 2 Super Bowls in a player’s first three seasons.
XXXIII. Teams that score first in the Super Bowl are 32-16 all-time. In Super Bowl 49, Patriots scored first, which improved the all-time record to 33-16.
XXXIV. Teams that had that had a higher time of possession were 36-12 in Super Bowls. The Patriots won the time of possession 33:46 to 26:14, which now makes the record 37-12 in Super Bowls.
XXXV. Tom Brady showed why he is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. He was 9/9 72 yards 1 TD on the final possession to give the Patriots the win.
XXXVI. There was only ONE NFL Draft First Round pick on the offensive side of the ball combined between the two teams in Super Bowl 49. The player was the 17th Overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft for Nate Solder, a Patriots Offensive Tackle.
XXXVII. Tom Brady set a NFL Super Bowl record with 37 completions.
XXXVIII. The Patriots and Seahawks have played each other 16 times in history in the regular season, splitting the series 8-8, Super Bowl 49, was their first ever postseason meeting.
XXXIX. In 269 games under Bill Belichick, his teams have never allowed an opposing QB to rush for 100 yards in a game. Russell Wilson, only rushed for 39 yards in Super Bowl 49.
XL. This was only the 5th Super Bowl since the postseason format was established in 1990 to have each of the No. 1 seeds from the NFC and AFC to play in the Super Bowl. The NFC has won all four of them, until the Patriots won Super Bowl 49 for the AFC.
XLI. The New England Patriots have tied the Cowboys and Steelers for the most all-time appearances in a Super Bowl with 8 appearances.
XLII. It was the first Super Bowl in history to have two coaches in their 60’s square off. Pete Carroll- 60, Bill Belichick- 62.
XLIII. Despite his loss in Super Bowl, Seahawks QB, Russell Wilson, is now 10-1 all-time against NFL Quarterbacks that have won a Super Bowl. Patriots Tom Brady is now 16-8 all-time.
XLIV. It was only the second time in Super Bowl history to have teams make it to back-to-back Super Bowls, the Patriots were the other team in 2003-2004, and the Seahawks did it 2014-2015.
XLV. In the Super Bowl victories for the Patriots under Bill Belichick, the margins of victories have been: 3 (Beat the Rams 20-17), 3 (Beat the Panthers 32-29), and 3 (Beat the Eagles 24-21).
XLVI. Despite the loss tonight in Super Bowl 49, I believe the Seahawks will find a way to make it back next season, and it wouldn’t surprise me, if we see a repeat of this year’s game, next year.
XLVII. The finish of Super Bowl 49, with Bruce Irving getting ejected was uncalled for. That is not the way a Super Bowl should end with punches being thrown, especially with young fans watching, and what happened with everything in the NFL this year.
XLVIII. Despite the loss in Super Bowl 49, the Seahawks, will still be one of the oddmakers favorites for winning Super Bowl 50, next season.
XLIX. The Patriots won the kick return battle to set up good starting field possession, having 49 Kick Return Yards, the Seahawks on the other hand had 0 Kick Return Yards.
