Analyzed Injury Report: What’s Next for Louisville’s Mathiang?

With basketball season in full swing and tournament play just around the corner, the last thing any of us want to talk about are injuries. Unfortunately, NCAA Men’s Basketball has suffered more than 200 injuries during the 15-16 season. With so many injuries it’s hard to overlook the negative impact this could have on teams climbing their way towards NCAA tournament play.

Over the weekend Louisville suffered a tough loss during their 78-56 victory over Western Kentucky when Mangok Mathiang went down with a broken foot. Mathiang will likely be out for six-to-eight weeks for recovery. We can expect to see him back just in time for March Madness.

Mathiang fractured the fifth metatarsal in his foot and had surgery on Sunday. Surgery was a success, a screw was placed in his foot to repair the fracture. The fracture and repair are similar to what is pictured below.

Louisville’s medical team will certainly take great care of Mathiang and with an aggressive rehab approach, we can expect to see a strong return from the Louisville ‘powerhouse.’

Although Mathiang is expected to recover rather quickly, there is no doubt that the Cards will feel the loss of such a physical player. Mathiang is not one of Louisville’s leading scorers, averaging 7.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, but he is imperative to the Louisville defense.

Louisville is certainly not the only team feeling the loss of critical players and with so many teams adjusting, we should all expect the unexpected as things heat up in NCAA Basketball. What off the bench rookie will rise to save the day, upset the world, and become a household name overnight? Only time will tell how teams heal and overcome challenges.
