The Mind State of Being Number One

In this year’s NBA Draft freshman forward Andrew Wiggins out of Kansas University, was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the number one overall pick. Wiggins time in Cleveland would be cut short due to a trade which involved him going to the Minnesota Timberwolves for All-Star power forward Kevin Love. The trade raised the question did the Cavaliers make a mistake or did they make the right decision?

While the answer to the question above can be debated back and forth, one thing is certain Andrew Wiggins knows he has a lot of work to do as an NBA player. Thursday I asked Wiggins the question on Twitter “What advice would he give to the next number one pick in the NBA draft?” Wiggins answer consisted of these three words “Never Get Complacent”. The fact that Wiggins responded to my question with a statement like that lets me know that he is determined to continue working on his game.

Wiggins stats this season aren’t jaw dropping as he averages just 10 points and three rebounds per game. However Wiggins is shooting at exactly 60% from the three-point line, which definitely is something that challenges those critics who said he wasn’t that good of a shooter coming out of college. His NBA career high in points thus far is 20 but that came in a 139 to 91 Minnesota loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Although Wiggins hasn’t started off this season as strong as he would like the fact that he knows he can’t be complacent in the NBA should carry him along way in his career.

As a team the Minnesota Timberwolves have a record of just three wins and seven losses this season. The upside for the Timberwolves is that they are a very young team, with Ronny Turiaf and Kevin Martin both at 31 years old being the teams oldest players. Wiggins and fellow Minnesota rookie Zach LaVine are both only 19 years old, the youngest players on Timberwolves roster. As the younger players get more experience in the NBA the Timberwolves could be good in the future seasons to come.

So although Wiggins has a lot of critics that may question if Wiggins will ever be good in this league, remember that he is not even 21 years old yet. The young number one draft pick knows he has a lot of work to do and if he keeps the mind state of “Never be complacent” he could live up to the potential that many NBA scouts think he has.
