Canelo vs. Kirkland: Weigh-in, Preview, Tale of Tape, Prediction
Last Saturday true boxing heads came away disappointed at the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. It’s understandable how the casual boxing fan could be turned off by the upcoming bout between light middleweights Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland. The best things in life are free. While many people across the country are still trying to figure out how they will pay next month’s cable bill with the additional $99.95 pay per view added, HBO will be showing a great fight for free this Saturday night. Congratulations to Floyd on his 48th victory over Manny Pacquiao, but that was a boring fight for the hefty price tag. Canelo and Kirkland, which was originally scheduled for May 2nd, but pushed to the follow week, because of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will be a more entertaining fight between two boxers that will look to throw hard-hitting punches all night. Canelo vs Kirkland will be an explosive fight that will take place on Saturday, May 9th at 9pm ET at Minute Maid Baseball Park in Houston, TX on HBO.
James Kirkland can punch with the best of them. He has a chance to put Canelo down on the canvas for the first time in his career, as he has a 85 percent knock out ratio in his 33 total bouts. He will need to learn how to avoid getting hit by the hard-hitting Canelo, but he will have a chance to win the fight if he shows the ability to out box Canelo. If he cuts off the ring and box Canelo on the outside he will have a chance to land some powerful punches to the body that may give Canelo problems. Canelo on the other hand will need to show his ability to box along with sticking his jab out there to set up his punching power. Although Kirkland has proven over his career that he can get up from a punch, I believe he will be knocked out by Canelo in the later rounds as he gets too reckless and tired towards the end. The 10th round, I look for Kirkland to be sleeping in the square circle Saturday night in front of some of the same boxing enthusiasts who came away disappointed from the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight last Saturday. Thoughts?
