Is Jay-Z a Friend or Foe to the sports agency business?
Jay-Z was born in Brooklyn, New York. He started out as a drug-dealer who became a rapper, then a very successful executive, entrepreneur, and music mogul. He has now added the title of sports agent to his professional resume. With the signing of such athletes as Kevin Durant, Robinson Cano, and just recently CC Sabathia. He has made a big splash in the pool of sports. He was instrumental in bringing the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn. He then sold his interest in the Brooklyn Nets to embark on the sports agent adventure. It is true that many young athletes have been to his popular 40/40 club in New York, and have received good advice from him. This was the beginning of him starting The Roc Nation Sports Agency. Many well known agents are very concerned about this move, because of the leverage Jay-Z already has with these athletes. With the help and partnership of CAA, he is off to a big start. Jay-Z has said that he is motivated by things that interest him. He has long been found in the front row at major sporting events. Even at some University of Kentucky games. The New Jersey Nets were fined $50,000 for Nets minority owner Jay-Z’s presence in the Kentucky locker room after the Wildcats clinched the 2011 Final Four berth. With the recent signings of WNBA rookie Skylar Diggins, The New York Jets Quarterback Geno Smith, and The New York Giants Wide Receiver Victor Cruz Jay-Z has become a friend to many athletes and a foe to many rival sports agents.
