Louisville Cardinals cruise past Eastern Michigan

The Louisville Cardinals played against a very determined Eastern Michigan Eagles team. Going into the game Louisville looked to sharpen their play as the more competitive part of their schedule is approaching. E. Michigan looked to pull the upset of one of the premier programs in the nation.  As hard as the Eagles fought the final score was 86 – 53.

The Cardinals started off with two straight turnovers.  The pace to open up the game was slow and sluggish. The Cardinals drained threes for their first points in the opening minutes.  Raymond Spalding got the crowd into the game with a monster jam off of a dime from Donavan Mitchell. The offense looked clean from that point and on, as Louisville raced out to a 25-13 lead at the 7:09 mark.

Rick Pitino’s usually hectic defense caused the Eagles problems throughout the latter part of the first half. Louisville caused steals, errant passes and it was a block party.  The defense ignited the Cardinals offense. The score going into halftime was 37-21 as Quentin Snider hit a beautiful floater to be beat the buzzer.  The Eagles couldn’t get many jump shots to go down. Most points came from the paint as they were 0-11 from the 3 and shot 31% overall, Louisville had five blocks. The Cardinals shot over 50% and knocked down 5 shots from three point land. Sophomore Quentin Snider lead the Cardinals with 10. Ty Toney lead the Eagles with 6 points.

Coming out of the halftime break the Cardinals began crisp besides a few careless plays. They opened a commanding 32 point lead towards the halfway point of the second half. As in the first half Louisville came out hitting their 3’s and jump shots and the Eagles could not get any offense going as they scored 9 points in the first 9 minutes before hitting back to back 3’s pointers.  The aggressive offensive play from the Cardinals caused the Eagles to foul early and often. Louisville was in the bonus at the midway point of the second half.  The team almost doubled the score with the biggest lead being 39 points.  It was a well balanced game for the men in red and black. Five players scored in double figures led by Damon Lee’s 16 point performance and Snider with 13 points and 4 assist. The big men stepped up as Ray Spalding had had 11 pts and 7 rebounds, his partner in crime Chinanu Onuaku had 12 pts and 7 rebounds.

Rick Pinto on his teams performance” We did everything well but rebound, If you hold them 30%, you want to make sure you get the rebounds and get out on the break. But overall we did a good job.  We didn’t play great but we played good. We’re glad we came away with a victory. “

The team looks to be a dark horse contender in the ACC. The Cardinals were picked 7th in the preseason polls for the ACC conference. It’s not Christmas but Louisville looks solid. They had a narrow defeat against Michigan St. and have dominated everyone else on the roster. Teams better bring their A game cause Louisville could be a nightmare for opponents.
