Don’t Sleep on AD

The 2015 NBA Playoffs will finally begin later on today and the New Orleans, who are the 8th seed in the West, will take on the number one-seeded Golden State Warriors. While many NBA experts and analysts aren’t giving the Pelicans a chance at all in a seven game series with the Warriors, I feel the Pelicans still have a chance. Why do I think the Pelicans have a shot? Two words …Anthony Davis!

The casual NBA fan may not really know about Anthony Davis, due to the fact that he plays for the New Orleans Pelicans in a market that isn’t as big in the NBA market. However they will get a chance to see AD and the Pelicans play on ABC Saturday at 3:30 PM EST.

Although the NBA’s Most Valuable Player trophy has been predicted to go to either James Harden of the Houston Rockets or Stephen Curry of the Warriors, what Anthony Davis has done this season for the Pelicans shouldn’t go unnoticed. On the season for New Orleans AD is averaging nearly 24 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks per game. Davis also has a PER (player efficiency rating) of 30.89, which is the highest in the NBA this season. The average NBA player has PER of around 15, so AD has doubled that.

Perhaps the greatest thing about Anthony Davis is that he is clutch, thus he hit this huge three-point shot at the buzzer to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder in February.

Now I know a lot of readers are going to say that’s just one shot, well that one shot was the difference between the Pelicans being in the NBA Playoffs or having an early off-season. The New Orleans Pelicans and the Oklahoma City Thunder both end up having a record of 45 wins and 37 losses, but only one of them could make the 8th seed in the Western Conference to go to the NBA Playoffs. So since the Pelicans defeated the Thunder twice in the regular season they won the tiebreaker. Davis ended up having 41 points and 10 rebounds in this game.

So now the question remains will the Pelicans pull off the upset against the Warriors in the First Round? That has yet to be proven, but what I do know is that Anthony Davis can’t be ignored anymore. What’s scary about AD is that at 6ft. 10 and 238 lbs , he has the ability to guard multiple positions, run the length of the court consistently, handle the basketball, make his free throws 80% of the time, and he can make a 18-20 foot jumpshot consistently. Also Anthony Davis just turned 22 years old in March so although he probably won’t get that MVP trophy this year, if healthy I expect him to at least have one MVP trophy in his career. So if you’re a fan of basketball I urge you to watch Davis in the NBA Playoffs and throughout the rest of his career.
