No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats 75, No. 16 Louisville Cardinals 73
The No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats got 21 points and 8 assists from sophomore guard Tyler Ulis as the Wildcats held on to defeat their arch-rival No. 16 Louisville Cardinals. 75-73 in Rupp Arena Saturday afternoon. Kentucky (10-2) came into the season struggling from three-point range shooting less than 30 percent, but got an 11 for 23 effort from downtown for 47.8 percent that proved to be the difference against the tough Louisville Cardinals (11-2). Kentucky still struggled to shoot the ball from the foul line going 16 of 25 (64%) but were able to hit enough free-throws in key moments to hold on to a two point victory. The Cardinals shot 27-63 from the field for 42.9% but shot only 28.6% from behind the three-point line, below their season average of 38% in the defeat to the Wildcats.
“This is the biggest game for our fans.” stated Ulis. “We had to come out and just win it.”
WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE CATS & CARDS:
Difference in the Game: – Kentucky shot 11-23 from behind the arch which was the difference in Kentucky holding on to a close victory, and the Cardinals stayed in the game and gave themselves a chance by out rebounding (39-29) the Cats on the glass by 10.Players of the Game: Dominque Hawkins the junior guard, played excellent defense and hit three key 3’s to help the Cats defeat the Cardinals. He finished the game shooting 75% from three and 4 of 6 from the free throw line for 13 points in 26 minutes of play. 5th year senior Damion Lee was a beast for the Cardinals finishing with 27 points in 40 minutes of play. His fade away three in the corner during the closing seconds could of won the game for Louisville.John Calipari : Kentucky’s Head Coach John Calipari received his 200th win today at UK. Calipari was able to reached this milestone faster than any of Kentucky’s former coaches. (Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith).Quick Thoughts: Jamal Murray, who hit some key shots for Kentucky today, played erratic at times. Murray needs to calm down and let the game come to him instead of forcing the action like he did today. Donovan Mitchell needs to see more minutes for the Louisville Cardinals. Mitchell was key in Louisville making a run down 16 points, he showed heart and toughness which gave Louisville a shot to win the game.
UP NEXT: Kentucky returns to action Saturday afternoon opening up SEC play against Mississippi on January 2nd in Rupp Arena. The Louisville Cardinals will begin ACC play against Wake Forest on January 3rd in the KFC YUM! Center.Be Sociable, Share! Tweet
