The Star Guard at Franklin Central
As the end of the Indiana High School basketball regular season approaches, the Flashes of Franklin Central are looking to revive themselves in post season play. Franklin Central, currently at 4-13 on the season, has the 7th toughest schedule in the state of Indiana. With that being said each team makes it into post season play in Indiana and the Flashes have three games remaining on the schedule.
One bright spot to the Flashes this season has been the stellar play of their junior guard Marcus Burk. Burk is averaging nearly 20 points and 4 rebounds per game for Franklin Central High School. Burk had his best scoring game back in January against Richmond High School, a game in which he scored 29 points. He is receiving interest from IUPUI, Hillsdale, Lincoln, PUC, Loyola, UIS, and Illinois state. Still Burk’s main focusing is turning his team’s season around and leading the Flashes through the post season.
Analyzed Sports: How have you manage to have such a good individual season even with the team struggling?
Marcus: Honestly I would trade my stats for some more wins. I just try to be aggressive and be a leader.
Analyzed Sports: So as a leader what have you been trying to do to keep the confidence of your teammates up?
Marcus: We are a pretty young team we are starting three juniors and two sophomores. I try to lead by example I’m not really a “rah rah” guy, I just try to do what the coaches ask and compete as hard as I can. I hope they see that I’m not giving up and that I believe we can win any game.
Analyzed Sports: What aspects of your game on the court do you feel you need to work on to make the team better overall?
Marcus: I definitely need to improve my ball handling and passing. Improving in both of those areas would take some pressure off my point guard, and allow us to beat the full court presses that we currently struggle with.
Analyzed Sports: What does the team as a whole need to do to make a late season run going into the post season?
Marcus: We’ve been in every game this year. We’ve played against tough teams. All we need to do is play defense and rebound and we will have a chance at winning our third straight sectional.
Marcus Burk and the Flashes will take on Roncalli at home this Saturday night at 7:30 pm. This could be a step in the right direction for Franklin Central and Burk’s stellar play could be the key throughout the rest of the season. Of course one thing to note is that every team makes the post season in Indiana, so the Flashes will have a chance to put the regular season behind them.
