Quick Thoughts on Kentucky’s 76-57 win over Vandy

The Kentucky Wildcats used an assertiveness on defensive to keep Vanderbilt from getting hot from three-point range which kept the Commodores off-balance on offense as Kentucky cruised to a 76-57 win Saturday afternoon in Rupp Arena.

“They (Vanderbilt) didn’t get off alot of three’s.” Said Senior Alex Poythress. “So I feel we did a great job on defense.”

Here are some quick thoughts from the game.

Alex Poythress: The play of Alex Poythress defensively and offensively allowed Kentucky to coast to this easy victory today.  His 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting came mostly from the inside, which created room for a balanced attack on the offensive end.Guard Play:  If Tyler Ulis 21 points 5 assists and Jamal Murray 18 points 7 rebounds continue to play this way the remainder of the season, the Wildcats will be a dangerous team in March.  March is about guard play, so with these two guards only turning the ball over twice is a great asset to have during tournament play.Derek Willis:  When Willis sets his feet, it’s good from behind the 3 point line.  Derek has found his niche with this team.  Rebound and Set your Feet.  Good to see the Junior’s confidence grow as he gets much deserved minutes for the young Wildcats.

Some things Kentucky need to work on.

The Play of Skal: John Calipari said after the game that he didn’t like this matchup for Skal Labissiere.  Skal played only 4 minutes and attempted one shot, which was a three-point shot that was wide right.  In order for Skal to reach his full potential he needs to develop some mental toughness to be able to play in any matchup no matter the opponent.  He’s just too good for that.  Maybe he’s a 4 year player.Free-Throw Line:  As a team Kentucky shoots below 70% on the season, but today they only shot 4-6 from the charity stripe.  Six attempts from the free-throw line is too low.  Get to the line more and shoot a better percentage equals advancing in the Big Dance.3 Point Line: Another weakness of this team is the 3 point shot.  Today Kentucky shot 31.6% from behind the arch on 6 of 19 shooting.  Way too many attempts with 19. This explains why they didn’t get to the free-throw line enough.  The Wildcats will need to shoot a consistent 35% with lower shot attempts to keep defenses from packing the lane in the future.
