Is Taylor County State Bound?

As the KHSAA basketball season approaches an end, the question arises as to who will win the state title. While I won’t say flat-out that one team is head and shoulders above anyone else, the Cardinals of Taylor County could be holding the state crown at the end of the season. They are currently atop of 5th region and have a record of 23-4 on the season. Taylor County is also undefeated in Regional and District play this season.

What has been the key to the Cardinals success? Well it helps when you have some of the best players, not only in the state but in the country. The Cardinals’ junior guard, Quentin Goodin, is ranked in the top 100 in the country and is the number two overall best player in the state of Kentucky. Goodin’s scholarship offers include Tennessee, Louisville, Florida, and Indiana. To make things even harder for Taylor County’s opponents Goodin’s teammates Brandon Berry, and David Sloan have gained Division one interest as well. Sloan, a sophomore, has already been offered a scholarship by Western Kentucky.

Even with all the talent on this Taylor County team, Quentin Goodin will tell you that winning isn’t easy and avoiding egos is crucial. “The key to our success is we’re not selfish. We won’t to see each other succeed. Our team bond is unbelievable. We go at each other’s necks in practice and in the games we all got each other’s back, this is a real family,”  said Goodin about his team’s success this season.

As for how he feels about the scholarship offers of his teammates Goodin went on to add “When my teammates tell me college coaches are coming to my games I tell them not to change. Just because a college coach is coming to watch me don’t mean to change. That’s more of an opportunity for my teammates to go prove themselves because college coaches talk. I want them to succeed in the sport they love and put a lot of time in as much as they want to see me succeed.” Quentin Goodin seems to believe in his teammates and that is definitely important for a talented team like the Cardinals.

With the Cardinals wrapping up their regular season Saturday night at home against Hopskinville, the question is how far can this team go? Quentin Goodin definitely believes that his team can go far in the post season. “For us to become the best in the state it starts with practice, just competing. We need to go even harder now that it’s getting Crunch Time,” Goodin said about his team’s chances to win a state title.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Taylor County Cardinals are the state champions next month.
