Male Wins in Double Overtime
After defeating St. X 30-13 at home in Maxwell Stadium, the Male Bulldogs would play an away game against the Trinity Shamrocks on Friday night. Trinity had just defeated Manual 14-3 at Manual, and were looking to take down the Bulldogs at Trinity’s Marshall Stadium. The game would come all the way down to the wire as both teams came ready to play.
Male received the football to start the 1st quarter and would open up the game with an 18 yard from running back, Ellis Cain. Then Male’s quarterback Davis Mattingly would throw a 42 yard pass to Keron Wakefield, however Male’s opening drive would end with a failed 4th down conversion at the 10:22 mark. Trinity would take over on their own 22 yard line and their first possession would end in a “three and out” after a fumble by quarterback Ryan Young. Male’s Jonah White would score the first points in the game after a 27 yard field goal, giving Male a 3-0 lead with 6:46 remaining in the 1st quarter. White would score another field goal with 2:29 left in the 1st quarter, making the score 6-0 Male.
The Shamrocks took advantage of a huge hole in the Male secondary’s defense, as Young found Dalton Jones for a 70 yard pass with 2:02 remaining in the 2nd quarter. On the next play Trinity’s running back, Donald Brooks, would score on a six yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining in the 1st quarter. The end result of the 1st quarter would remain 7-6 Trinity.
In the 2nd quarter Male’s defense would make big plays, as cornerback Kamron Cuf would turn into Trinity’s worse nightmare. Cuf would intercept Young’s pass and return it 32 yards, all the way to the end zone for a Bulldog touchdown. Male would lead 13 -7 with 7:19 remaining in the 1st half and the score remained the same going into half time.
Trinity would open up the second half with the ball, and managed to get one 1st down on their opening drive before punting the ball back to Male. The Bulldogs would go “three and out” on their 1st drive to start the 3rd quarter and give the ball back to Trinity with 4:35 remaining in the 3rd quarter. This time Trinity would take advantage of the football, as Young threw a 46 yards TD pass to receiver Rodjay Burns. Kicker Matthew Coontz would connect on the extra point, as Trinity took a 14-13 lead with 2:49 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The score would be 14-13 Male to end the 3rd quarter, with the Bulldogs maintaining possession of the football to go in the 4th quarter.
Male’s drive included two 4th down conversions, before running back Demetrius Holt scored on a three yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs would also convert on a two point conversion, making the score 21-14 Male with 10:38 remaining in the 4th quarter. Trinity’s Brooks would carry the ball three straight times, running for one 1st down before the Shamrocks would be forced to punt the ball back to Male. The Bulldogs would take possession of the football with 7:33 remaining and after two big dropped passes by Male’s Zackery Smith, the Shamrocks would get the ball back. Trinity would take advantage of the 5:41 Male had left them and Brooks would score on a 4 yard touchdown run. Trinity’s Coontz would convert on the point after the touchdown, tying the game at 21-21 with :59 left. Male had used all of its timeouts and decided to run the clock all the way down to force overtime.
In Overtime Trinity would get the ball first and Brooks scored easily on a 10 yard TD run. Coontz would again convert on the PAT, making the score 28-21 Trinity. Male would get the ball and after three straight carries, Ellis Cain would score on a 3 yard TD run making the score 27-28 Trinity. Male’s White would score on the PAT to force a 2nd overtime. In the 2nd overtime Male would elect to receive the ball first and Mattingly would find Smith on a 2 yard pass for a touchdown on 2nd down and 2 yards. Jonah White would connect on another PAT to make the score 35-28 Male. Trinity would get the ball back and after a second rushing attempt Brooks would score on a 4 yard TD run. However the score would be 34-35 and Trinity would fail on a two point conversion attempt. The Final score would be 35-34 Male, as the Bulldogs are officially on top of the KHSAA 6A Football District.
